So your thinking about making an app?

Mobile apps are quickly becoming a very powerful marketing and communication tool for many businesses. While some of these apps are games, some gimmicky toys, some helpful reference guides and other are just plain weird. Within the ski industry mobile apps have the potential to transform a guest’s visit or at very least help improve the way guest experience the mountains they love. With a new season right around the corner, resorts are exploring potential for getting their own app and are also navigating the may options on how to make this vision a reality. We have compiled a list of some key questions and with a short video providing you with the answers you need to know.

1. We have seen lots of different pricing, are there different types of apps?

2. How do we get the GPS data for our mountain?

3. How are were going to manage the information in our app?

4. How do we decide who should build our app?

5. How does out app get into the app store?

Treeline Interactive is a San Diego & Lake Tahoe based interactive agency with over 3 years experience in mobile app development. With the launch of Facebook Markup Language (FBML) and fan pages it gives companies the chance to get their identity in the face of users. But the use of Facebook means you have to follow their rules. And everyone knows that Facebook is famous for changing their mind (guidelines) quite often. For example, they decided that 720px was way too wide for FBML pages, and 520px was the new limit. Facebook was nice enough to give you a warning a few months before but I’m sure there were a bunch of FBML pages that were thrilled to adhere to this narrow-minded decision (Treeline Included, click here to view our FB Fan Page done in FBML).

Half a year later Facebook decided that FBML was far too limiting; introduced earlier this year was iFrame Apps. We can now take any page (javascript, flash, html, css, the works) and slap it in our fan pages. As long as you stay within the grid (520px wide by 800px tall) you are good to go. Anyone who didn’t know the previous framework is jumping for joy.(Myself included)

Just goes to show that the mighty FB controls a portion of the web. So much in fact that majority of companies in TV commercials don’t even give their company URL, they give their Facebook URLs. Can you imagine what that means for iFrames? It can become a companies entire website! And why not, they give you the ability to and you can even like it. Who needs SEO, you are usually in the top ten for it anyway. Once you can get past the “My Company Name | Facebook” title that pops up in Google, you are golden. So the whole idea may not be as sexy as having your own site but Facebook is the in and whether you like it or not, you better Obey Facebook.

Need an Example? Check out the newest Fan Page we just launched using the new iFrame Feature for Sierra at Tahoe Ski Resort. Click Here.

Every year there is a special season that gets people excited, for some it is Christmas, others summer or even halloween but around the Treeline office there is always a little extra excitement around Addy time. While there are countless award shows these days we especial enjoy participating in the American Advertising Federation Addys awards. The great part about the Addys is the first round, the local competition. Checking out the amazing work from our peers in San Diego and showing off our latest or great work brings us a nice warm feeling in our heart. There are so many great shops in San Diego and it is often hard to keep up on what they are doing so this is the perfect event to bring that work into the spotlight.
This year we were especial impressed with some of the work by our friends over at Mering Carson, Fishtank Brand Advertising, The San Diego Zoo and Bailey Gardiner. Great job guys, keep up the good work and thanks for sharing some of the magic you have been producing.

We are also very happy to announce that we were able to bring home three awards from the local competition this year and just got word back that one of our entries won at the district level. Look out nationals here we come! Here are a couple quick teasers of the projects that brought it home for us, so give them a quick once over and lets dream up what is possible for next year.

What is the difference? Can we reuse our iPhone app code since it is Objective-C? What is Cocoa and Cocoa Touch? The short answer is you need to rebuild you app but here is a more technical breakdown…

Objective-C is a language, while Cocoa and Cocoa touch are frameworks.

Cocoa is the combination of the Foundation and AppKit frameworks, Cocoa Touch is the combination of the Foundation and UIKit frameworks. Cocoa and Cocoa Touch sit on top of other collections of frameworks to create the API stacks. The other layers are Media, Core Services and Core OS.

In iOS, the UIKit framework provides the infrastructure for building graphical applications, managing the event loop, and performing other interface-related tasks. The UIKit framework is completely distinct from the AppKit framework. Therefore, when migrating to a Cocoa application, you must replace a significant number of interface-related classes and logic. Anything that starts with UI… Like UITextField would be changed to a NSTextField as a simple example. Many of the classes share that similar functionality and can be ported by changing the class name, but most of these ports will require some more changes. For portable elements we must consider if we should start backwards and modify or if it will be more efficient to start fresh using the existing application as a guide. Other elements like the media must be recreated for the Mac OS media layer.

Here are some more details that you can review, it is written in terms of an cocoa to cocoa touch port. I’d say it is a fair description but also aimed to put developers at ease. It might be a little more than the client will want but it good to understand. I’d say the most valuable elements that can be reused from most projects are the data model and our project familiarity.

I have the best commute! I ride my bike along the beach boardwalk a couple of blocks turn left down the neighborhood street to the only main road in Mission Beach and find myself at the Treeline studio. This by far has been one of the greatest joys I experience in the morning. I take in the beautiful scenery allowing myself to think about the day without traffic, road rage, and spending less on gas is always a bonus. Not to mention its one less check mark on my Eco footprint. Many of Treeline’s employees walk, skate, or ride their bike to work as well. If you’re interested in riding your bike to work and need some encouragement, check out:
